Bergantino
The town of rides
In Bergantino, located in the northern part of Polesine (also called Alto Polesine), you can find the Distretto Industriale della Giostra (industrial district of rides) headquarters, at Palazzo Strozzi. The history of the town is strictly connected to the tradition of travelling shows and to the world of Fairs and Amusement Parks. Here, rides aren't just a form of entertainment, but are above all a product of economic, cultural and artistic excellence; a source of work and social wellness.
The municipality of Bergantino is also known for the Museo storico della Giostra e dello Spettacolo Popolare (historical museum of rides and popular shows). This one-of-a-kind museum was conceived as a cultural centre for research and historical documentation of all that concerns the fabulous and colourful world of travelling shows and popular culture. Inside, you can breathe in the soul and recent history of Bergantino. There are many precious and rare items which direct the visitor along a fascinating chronological and anthropological journey.
Also, the Chiesa Arcipretale di San Giorgio Martire (Archpriest's Church of San Giorgio Martire) is definitely worth a visit.
Among the civil architecture, Palazzo Diani (Diani Palace), also known as Diani Castle, due to its origins, stands out. It is characterised by a little central tower, built during the 16th century by Giovanni Romei, appointed Count of Bergantino by the Estensis. The tower lies on the ruins of an old fortress destroyed by the Venetians in 1482 during the War of Salt.
